General study tips for quarter tests

-Take good notes from your teacher on how to prepare for these tests. Most teachers will tell you what to expect and give tips on how to study for them. These are training tests; you are working on how to pull together ideas from a long period of study.

Tips for English and History

-Look at your test preparation notes. What exactly will your quarter test cover?

-Collect all tests and separate into classes- place in folders. Review your old tests. Are there areas of confusion or concepts you feel unsure of?

-In English-

Does it make sense to reread the short stories, myths or other long works? No. Instead look at class notes. What sections of a story did we cover? There will usually be quotations on the test so how should you review them? Look at your notes and see which ones we covered. Who is speaking? What do they say about the story? How is the quotation important in terms of the story? Does this quotation show some type of "literary term"? Can you explain how it shows a literary term?

-Vocabulary is a short section on most quarter tests. How do you study for it? Most people find success quickly reviewing the words in the book by covering lists with their hand. Do you keep flashcards? If so bring them out and organize them. How will you be tested on it? Do you need to know how to spell them? Do you need to know definitions only? Will you put them in a sentence? These are things that are important in figuring out how to study.

-Grammar/ Writing section-

Review the basic ideas of what makes a solid paragraph. Remember? Every paragraph has a topic sentence and supporting sentences. Every sentence in a paragraph supports that topic sentence. For example, could you write a paragraph about an "experience" you had somewhere? Would you just start writing? Hopefully, you would brainstorm and web. Right? Then you would use that brainstorming!

-For History-

How to prepare for matching and fill-in-the blank questions:

-Look at old tests! Most important concepts are on those pages.

-Review chapter questions- Do you know the answers?

How to prepare for discussion questions: Did your teacher give you the essay questions ahead of time? If so, prepare your answers now.

-Matching and fill-in-the blank type of questions require a different type of studying than how you prepare for essay questions. Try to think of the "big picture." What kinds of questions deal with this idea?

Examples might include: ( If we have covered these units.)

-Why was ancient Egypt able to exist for so long. What geographical and social features of Egypt enabled them to exist for so long…. What role does "environment" play in the success of civilizations?

-Why did the Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon die out?

-How did some of the early civilizations deal with crime?

-Can you compare some famous person we have studied with a person today who has made a similar impact on those around them?

-What did we as modern humans gain from say…..the Assyrians, or…Hebrews…..?

-What is something in our life that is very similar to what the typical Babylonian…..Persian…..Assyrian…..or Egyptian….might experience?

TEST TAKING TIPS:

  1. THESE TESTS ARE NOT THE END OF THE WORLD FOR YOU! However, I am sure you want to do well. Right? Prepare by spending time each night reviewing for them in an organized manner and you will be confident.
  2. Taking a test- Look over the whole test after you sign your name. Familiarize yourself with the sections. What section looks hardest? Which counts the most? Make a plan to spend a certain amount of time on each section. Stick to that plan.
  3. End of the test- After you first finish a test pause for one minute and shut your eyes…breathe and relax…then reread your test. Are there any confusing answers? Did you answer everything? If you are unsure about an answer and have already given it an educated guess don't change it now. Your first guess was probably better.
  4. Now go place it "proudly" under Shy Buddha.
